A prospective PHD applicant’s research interest
Will you admit student or assistant this year?
A prospective student who interested in your research
Dear Dr. XXXX,
Thanks for your attention paid to this mail.
This is XXX a senior student from XXXXUniversity in China. I am going to receive/have received my Bachelor’s degree in summer XXX and applying for theXXX Program in XXX University for 2014 fall entry. After reading your newlypublished paper (XXXXXXXX 文章名称) and otherselected publications, I find that your research on hair follicle stem cellsand its application on hair regeneration not only matches what I ’m researching on during my internship(especially something about XXX) now but also attracts me a lot. Therefore, Iam writing to wonder if there is any chance for me to do research under yoursupervision in the future.
PHD？（wonder there is any chance for me）
I’ve been doing research in Institute of Biochemistry and CellBiology……
China Academy of Sciences (SIBCB, CAS) since June this year. Duringthis summer, I’ve been working in Professor XXX’s lab, which researches on howWnt regulates mammary gland’s development and mammary gland’s tumor genesis. Myjob here is to first make knockdown and overexpression constructs of some geneswe’re interested in to do some in vitro experiments, and then to do somefurther in vivo tests. I’m happy to find that some of the genes have proved tobe related with the pathway we are researching on. At the same time, I’ve beenlearning some basic and featured techniques of the lab from senior graduates, which is interesting and meaningful.
Through doing research and reading related papers, I’ve got a deeperinsight into Wnt signal pathway in regulating somatic stem cells and becomemore interesting in the research on stem cells and some related fields ondevelopment. In the future, I’m interested in finding out the key factors inregulating somatic stem cells’ development and making the result into further applications in both tumor therapy and medical regeneration.
In terms of your newly published Cell paper,I’ve read it carefully and if you don’t mind, I have some questions to talkabout with you as follows:
1. In this paper, you focus on McSC and EpSC toexplore. I wonder how to exclude other types of cells for there may be anothercell type also secreting key factors to make a triple‐coordination.
2. In Figure 2, you show that after TAM induction, differentiated bulb melanocytesfrom control and mutant mice show similar expression of melanocytedifferentiation markers. According to the previous result, why mutant bulbdoesn’t show a higher expression level? Is it because the bulb has an“expression peak” or the induction doesn’t work on differentiated bulb?
3.In Figure 4, you show that Wnt10b has anactivation function. But why do you use Wnt7a instead in the furtherexperiments? Is it because Wnt10b cannot be purified easily?
4.Also in Figure 4, panel L, you show anin‐vitro experiment, but why not use in vivo instead for it may be moreconvincing?
Thanks for your patience to my long mail. Yourattention is of vital importance for me. As an undergraduate student, I spentquite a long time to find my research interest. I had research projectexperience in biostatistics, protein detection, and finally find my destiny instem cells and development. I have been reading certain research papers in thisfield and a lot of them are in my schedule. To pursue my PhD research in a topuniversity in US has been my dream and your research area matches my interest, and I am also hoping to learn more in this area.
Please find my resume followed and attached ofthis e‐mail. I am looking forward to your further instructions. Thanks verymuch for reading this letter. Best regards.
